About this Piece

About the Artist

Cheek began his career in architecture. He received a Bachelor of Environmental Design from Texas A&M University in 1989, and then moved to Colorado to practice architecture.

In 1997 he moved to Florence Italy where Cheek to studied Classical Drawing & Painting at the Florence Academy of Art. In 2001 Cheek returned to Texas and began painting, exhibiting, and teaching full time.

Cheek has taught for the Colorado Institute of Art, Tarrant County College, TCU, given private workshops and lectures, and was awarded an Artist in Residency at Texas A&M University in 2010.

Cheek has been very deliberate about advancing figurative realism within the Texas contemporary art scene. In 2007, he founded the Texas Academy of Figurative Art where he is the Director and primary instructor.

For over a decade now, his work could be characterized as possessing a classical realistic demeanor. The subject matter of his work is primarily figurative and still life, with some portraiture. His interest in religion, coupled with his passion for psychology, has led him to a distinctive vision that is both contemporary and infused with faith.
