From Kelly Porter's 2017 exhibition catalogue published by Blue Gallery in Kansas City, MO:

"Kelly Porter infuses her personal history into every stroke. 'I deal with emotion a lot in the process. Painting in this way allows me to communicate deeply, but wordlessly...I add very loud color to otherwise subtle environments, and I like to throw in sharp, dynamic colors to an agreeable palette.' Although active, the images breathe quiet space into the viewer. Porter is an artist who spends every moment deep in the folds of creative thinking, and larger philosophical questions are woven into Porter's studio practice. 'I love thinking about science, faith, reason, and humanism. I also work in feelings of pain, loss, beauty, and joy. In the end, the work is a reflection of all these things.'"

About the Artist

Dallas native Kelly Porter studied printmaking and philosophy at the Kansas City Art Institute and earned an MFA degree in Fine Arts from the State University of New York in Buffalo. Her intuitive oil paintings and mixed media works on paper are energized by bold shapes, repetitive patterns, and gestural lines. Subjects are informed by life at the microscopic level, music and time-based mark-making, scientific experiment, and botanical cultivation. In 2006, Porter was awarded "Best Visual Artist" by Kansas City Magazine.
