About this Piece

Vernon collaborated with the printers at Flatbed Press in 1995 to create four etchings. "Milkweed" was the most ambitious of the four and brought together Vernon's painterly marks with her drawing and the etching of actual leaf shapes. Titled "Milkweed" for the plant she etched using soft ground, Vernon created a tondo design within a square using four plates, one for each color: black, yellow, blue-green, and red.

About the Artist

In 2017, Dallas-based artist Mary Vernon finished her 50th year at SMU where she taught studio art, color theory and art history. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries both nationally and abroad, but her impact on the Dallas art community is one so great, we may never know the extent of its reach. Of her work, Vernon has said, "A part of my work has always been organization and analysis. Structures suggested themselves from the placement of objects in rooms, from works of art, and from the tangles of landscape. Underlying any image is a geometric structure. And another part of my work has been that of seeking the ideas, intents, desires, wit, and experience of a place - the genius loci. I have tried to show how the vegetative landscape regards itself. If form, for a poet, can be both structure and essence, it can be so for a painter."
