About this Piece

Scholder created this relief etching to a part of the Flatbed Portfolio in 1994. The key plate was zinc and Scholder used an automatic-drawing method to create the marks which printed yellow then poured acid-blocking ground over the marks. When he saw the shape the pour was making, he realized if he printed the image as relief, he could keep the shape of the pour which eclipsed the marks made on the plate. The zinc plate was etched very deeply so the relief surface could be inked with a roller. The second plate, which printed as a yellow, was also a relief plate and was rolled with a very transparent modified yellow. This second plate was printed first and the key etched plate printed second using a dense relief black.
