Condition:
Recto: One area of foxing in the white of the cloud at top center. There is a curved tear in the top center edge of the paper that is better seen in the verso image. Verso: There are scattered areas of foxing across the verso but they are not readily visible on the recto except the one that is mentioned. The tear is much more visible at the top of the sheet. The fact that it has pigment bleeding through could indicate that the tear happened while it was being worked on by the Artist.

About this Piece

About the Artist

Painter and graphic artist Alma Lucille Jeffries, known as Lucille Jeffries, was born in Louise, Texas, and grew up in Del Rio and Mission. She graduated, in 1931, from Mary Hardin-Baylor College, Belton, Texas, where she also worked as a teacher in 1934-1939, after two years teaching at San Marcos Baptist Academy, 1932-33.

She continued her studies during summers while teaching, receiving a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University, New York City. She also attended summer sessions at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. In 1939 Jeffries began teaching at Mt. Auburn School, Dallas, retiring in 1950. In the 1940s, she taught concurrently at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts School.

A member of the Texas Printmakers, Jeffries has work is in the collections of the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas at Austin; La Retama Library, Corpus Christi; and Dallas Museum of Art. She died in Dallas.
