About this Piece

Alice Neel is known primarily as a painter of people. Her portraits are stylized and easily identifiable. The works are less about capturing an exact likeness and are more psychological in nature.

Although known for her portraits, she would occasionally explore other subjects like this large still life lithograph; a meditation on light.

About the Artist

Alice Neel was born in Merion Square, Pennsylvannia as the fourth of five children to Alice Concross Hartley and George Washington Neel. After graduating high school, Neel worked for the Army as a secretary and pursued her passion for art on the side by attending classes at the School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia.

In 1921, Neel enrolled as a student at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art) and studied under Henry Snell and Rae Sloan Bredin. After graduating in 1925, Neel briefly moved to Cuba, but eventually settled in New York City. She became a member of the Works Progress Administration and between 1935 to 1943, worked in the Easel Division of the Federal Art Project. However, the following decade proved to be difficult for Neel to find a market for her work.

Despite the rise of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s and 1960s, Neel continued to develop her portrait paintings of regular people. Her subjects ranged from family members to strangers she encountered on the street. In 1960, Neel painted the poet, art critic, and MoMa curator Frank O'Hara. After five sittings and the completion of two portraits, both paintings were well received by the public. Subsequently, the momentum of the women's rights movement also led to an increased appreciation for Neel's work.

By 1974, Neel received a major retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Later in 1979, Alice Neel was one of the first honorees to receive the Women's Caucus for Art award (alongside Isabel Bishop, Selma Burke, Louise Nevelson, and Georgia O'Keefe). Not long after in 1981, Neel traveled to Moscow for a major exhibition of her work.

The last two decades of Neel's life was filled with solo shows, lectures and panel discussions. This included her appearance on the Tonight Show hosted by Johnny Carson in 1984. That same year, she passed away at her New York apartment due to inoperable colon cancer. Today Alice Neel's works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, among many others.
