About this Piece

In Vera Barnett's "Classical Plastique" paintings, she explores the classical themes of people's emotional relationships, their environment, and their life circumstances. The plastic figures she sews and staged sets she constructs serve as her model for compositions that appropriate well known paintings from art history. Barnett reconstructs these masterpieces through the filter of her own vision and life, intending dual interpretations and responses. Bosch, Grunewald, Klimt, Manet, Picasso, Rousseau and Wyeth inspire the interpretations she paints with classical realist skills.

About the Artist

Vera Barnett has developed a truly unique painting style and process. She crates the elements of the composition by sewing and painting plastic, cardboard and cloth to create figures and animals, by painting backdrops using cardboard and tape, and by assembling found objects. Once these elements are set up in her studio, Barnett paints her still life arrangement in a trompe l'oeil manner so real as to confound the viewer.
