About this Artist

David McManaway was born in Chicago, IL in 1927. McManaway received his degree from the University of Arkansas, and he was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and the Engelhard Award from the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA.

Biographical information courtesy of David Dike Fine Art.

"Best known for wall reliefs he called Jomo Boards, McManaway juxtaposed found objects such as plastic toys, stuffed animals, insects, bones, dime store jewels and other miscellany in stream-of-conscious fashion. McManaway moved to Dallas in 1959 and abandoned painting in favor of assemblage art."

Davenport, Bill. "David McManaway 1927-2010," Glasstire, April 24, 2010.

Of his own work and process, McManaway says, "In the beginning will be an idea or something I respond to and you could even almost say it's somewhat intellectual. Then through the middle part it's catch as catch can, but I've learned to recognize the method in a sense and I've learned to trust my intuitiveness, and that's the way they go together. In the end I may say, well, I have to fix things up and this doesn't quite work. And that finishes them. To me that's the only way to work. Whether you're painting or doing sculpture or what...'Course, the poor sculptor has to plan ahead. Luckily with my little technique I don't have to plan ahead at all."
