About this Artist

Artist JAMES SURLS, is internationally recognized for his sculptures and drawings. Born in Terrell, Texas in 1943, he earned a BS degree from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, in 1966 and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1969. He moved to Dallas in 1969 and taught at SMU from 1970 to 1975. He moved to Houston and then Splendora, Texas in 1976. From 1976 to 1982 he taught sculpture at the University of Houston. He received an N.E.A. Fellowship in 1979 and was awarded “Texas Artist of the Year in 1991. In 1998, he left Texas and moved to Carbondale, Colorado where he lives with his wife, the artist Charmaine Locke.
