About this Piece

This portfolio of ten matted photographs was printed from the original negatives and exhibited at Photographic Archives Gallery in 1988. The exhibition was a collaboration between the gallery, Andy Hanson and the Dallas Opera and proceeds from the sale of individual prints and from the limited edition portfolios benefited the Dallas Opera in their 1988 season.

Opera was a passion for Andy Hanson as evidenced by his thorough documentation of The Dallas Opera, formerly the Dallas Civic Opera, from 1960 to 1990. He photographed 82 productions during this thirty year period (approximately 364 rolls of 35mm film), some on assignment for the Dallas Times Herald, but most were made after working hours for the newspaper according to Andy.

Andy was well liked by the Dallas Opera community and his discreet shooting style enabled him to capture quintessential moments at short range. With one exception, Andy recalls Australian soprano, Joan Sutherland made her American stage debut in Dallas in 1960, but she had him thrown out because she said 'I don't have me wig and I don't have on me make-up, so get him out of here.' Andy had to come back the next night when she had everything on.

About the Artist

Andy Hanson was best known as a noted and well-liked society photographer for the Dallas Times Herald from 1960-1991. He chronicled daily life in Dallas for over three decades. Ever-present at society functions and news worthy events, his trademark was his 35mm Leica range finder camera perched on a chest tripod that allowed him to juggle a hand-held flash with homemade bounce card and a notepad for taking names.

We began a working relationship with Andy Hanson in 1988 curating our first exhibition of his photographs, A Retrospective of The Dallas Civic Opera. When his employer, the Dallas Times Herald closed in 1991 we opened our vaults to receive Andy’s tens of thousands of prints and negatives that he produced since arriving in Dallas in 1960. It was at that time that I started printing Andy’s negatives full-time and promoting his work to collectors. We have had eight one-person exhibitions for Andy and curated more than a dozen shows for other venues in Dallas. After his death in 2008 the Andy Hanson Archive at Photographic Archives Gallery was distributed between the Texas/Dallas History Division of the Dallas Public Library, the DeGolyer Library at SMU, and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza.

ARTIST STATEMENT
"I like to walk a lot. I like to ride with somebody else driving, it’s great. I like to be a passenger so I can see more. When I drive, I go the back ways. I don’t like to get on the freeways – I never know where to get off. The other day I was driving a guy to Mesquite. He said, “Turn right here.” I said, “Who’s driving? Whose car is this?” So we went the back way and saw some things he’d never seen before. When you get on the freeway you can’t see anything. There’s nothing to see anyway." (Andy Hanson)
